We thought we were done shopping: Exhausted Neha handed us over to her MIL

2013/10/01

We have a brand new member in our family. He was born at 8:30 am in Pune. My sister
was there( baby is her grandson) and helped made the critical decision to get the Surgery
done right away and not to wait. All is well and baby/mom/dad and everyone is happy
and relieved. IN India the babies have no name for few days. Parents look at the time and
place of birth, have a priest draw up a horoscope and then choose proper name suited to
the planetary position at the time. I will say more that 60% of population( may be lot more)
follows this in some form or other. Also, in India, it is illegal to find out the baby’s gender
before it is born. The doctor can get in BIG trouble if she hint on the baby’s gender. Aborting (
forced or otherwise) girl child is a major issue here.

After the morning yoga, we checked our list twice and realized that no matter how efficient
you are, wedding shopping cannot be done in one day. Exhausted Neha handed us over to
her MIL ( Indian way of saying mother in law) who braved the alleys of Santa Cruz to start
checking off the items on our list. Five hours later, she rushed us into the gourmet restaurant
called Sizzler ( not to be confused with American Sizzler). It was 3 pm and the place was going
to close soon. We had wonderful sizzling iron plates filled with heaps of vegetables and
chicken in delicious sauces. The smell of Indian cooking reminded us of the time and hunger
and we ate with vengeance.

Looking at the check list, we can truly say that majority of the shopping is done, decisions are
made and things are ordered. In the truly interconnected world, getting opinions from the
people across the world and taking the measurements for custom fitting is no brainer and
getting things done in India ( if you have money, connections and relatives with know how) is
a piece of cake. One more short trip tomorrow and I think we are really really done ( at least
shopping from India). I think Theresa is exhausted and amazed at the same time, may be a
little overwhelmed. She is a true adventurous soul, India does overwhelm all your senses.
Came home to a quiet home. Anaya had gone for her painting class, skating class and the
birthday party starting at 5 pm. ( I thought I signed up my kids for too many classes, you
should talk to mothers in Mumbai. Classes range from Chinese, French, football, badminton,
dancing, speech and debate, drama, kumon, ahletics, painting, ….you get the idea and this
is for 4 year old already going to a private preschool) . But, I have to say that Anaya is smart
beyond her age in every way.

Anaya ( remember 4 year old) came back from the birthday party at 8 pm. She was loaded
with goody bags of candies and chocolate. She had a gift for “Ankh” the brother who is still in
Mom’s tummy and one for herself. She gave me her favorite candy as well the ‘best’ sticker.
Renu told me that the average party has about 60 to 100 kids. I am trying to calculate that if
one gets invited to all the birthdays parties, there are not enough weekends in a year. Do you
get to borrow the time from future to celebrate these birthdays ??

We forgot to bring the Burger from Macdonald again and Anaya put her figure on my
forehead and said , “ put it in your memory to get it tomorrow ok? “ She went on to show
us her dance routine on the Bollywood song and promised to do the “Gangnum Style”
tomorrow. I will video tape that one and try to post it.

I should sleep now while it is still quiet. Good night, Namaste
